Defining the “Locally Grown” Concept

A USA Today article takes a look at what “locally grown” really means, as retailers from Wal-Mart to Whole Foods increasingly devote more shelf space to fresh and safe products. Whole Foods, for one, now spends almost 22 percent of its produce budget on locally grown products, up from 15 percent four years ago, it says.

Small-format stores are catching on as grocers cope with rising costs and limited capital, MSNBC/The Associated Press reports.

This month, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. opened four pilot Marketplace stores in Arizona that are half the size of a traditional supermarket.
